Ministry Transition Letter

to the Congregation

Rev. John T. Crestwell, Jr.

April 11, 2024

The departure of a called minister is a big transition for our ministry.  I, like so many others, am grieving this sudden change with Rev. Anastassia’s departure on June 16th.

The immediate question is – what now?  What’s next for our ministry team? Ultimately, the board and congregation decide this, I hope with my consideration.  Below is my input on the immediate and long range plan for UUCA.

First, developing a relationship with a new minister as a hire or “call” takes time and energy.  Right now, the staff and I need to process this change in leadership before there is a decision on calling or hiring another minister.  I recommend UUCA not call or hire another minister for six to 12 months.

Second, Rev. Anastassia’s leadership, ideas, vision, knowledge and skills cannot be replaced—that will be a loss—but some of her specific hands-on duties can be absorbed by the Faith Formation Director and Membership Coordinator (with additional hours and pay). I have already put together a new budget for the Finance Committee to review and affirm before it is voted on by our Board of Trustees.

Specifically, Sarah will become the Life Span Faith Formation Director and, with her assistant, will head adult programming, Middle, After Hour, and evening classes, etc. in addition to her work with our children.

Laura will have a new title: Director of Member Engagement and will add an additional 5-hours to her weekly work schedule.  Laura will also hire a 10-hour a week Member Engagement Assistant to help with small groups and other membership duties freeing her up to focus more on member retention and sustainability.

Sunday worship will continue to offer diverse voices.  I will continue speaking 2 times (sometimes 3x) per month but will ask guest UU ministers and our Minister Emeritus, Fred Muir, to preach as he is available.  I have added resources to the budget to cover guest speakers.

As Rev. Anastassia transitions out in the next few months, I will supervise all staff instead of some staff people.  I will assume the lead of stewardship (pledges) and the Capital Campaign Exploration Team, roles Rev. Anastassia held, in addition to my other duties.

Third, we are exploring the possibility of hosting an intern this fall. This person may provide additional ministerial support.  I am in conversation with the members of our previous intern committee regarding this possibility.

Finally, I think that over the next 6-12 months, we can assess what our congregation needs from another minister and whether we need a full-time or part-time minister. As stated, the board and I will be talking with you about this over many months.

I am grieving and sad to say goodbye to Rev. Anastassia.   We worked diligently to have a close, productive relationship. I know this was an opportunity she could not let pass.  And I also know that UUCA will be okay because we have done many hard things in the past.  Our future is bright!

See you around,

Rev. John
