Mindfulness Book Club XII

Mindfulness Book Club XII on Zoom Mondays at Noon or 6:30 PM, from Mon. Jan. 22 to Apr. 10 (also a Unitarian Universalist Association Common Read) with a hiatus for Mondays Mar. 4 & 11. The book is Dana Ruttenberg’s award-winning Repentance & Repair: Making Amends In an Unapologetic World, a bold, explicitly interfaith undertaking. Ruttenberg is a Rabbi, & Beacon Press is the publishing affiliate of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations. It can shed new light on the Soto Zen practice of atonement & an earlier very well-received Mindfulness Book Club book: Thich Nhat Hanh on Reconciliation. We can especially enjoy discussing where it differs.

The core of the book is the Rabbi’s reading of Maimonides, who put together in the 12th century a Jewish set of directives for daily life from the Talmud. Nonetheless, Ruttenberg is never just addressing a Jewish audience. Her fearless discussion is informed by contemporary relationships (& scholarship on them) + national & world events. The book does an important job of addressing the ubiquity of the construct of “forgiveness” from Christian cultural influence in the United States while pointing out that it is a distracting factor in many issues.
