General Assembly (GA) of the

Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA)

Preliminary Report

by Heather Millar

Several members of UUCA attended the UUA’s annual General Assembly “Faithfully Becoming” in Pittsburgh and online from June 19 through 25. Staff participated in professional days on Monday and Tuesday and members joined on Wednesday. Experiences at GA are varied including business sessions, speakers, workshops, worship services, identity group gatherings, celebrations, individual one on ones, and small group meet-ups.

The work prior to this GA focused heavily on the report of the Article II Study Commission to reorganize and reword our current Principles, Purposes, Inclusion, and Freedom of Belief. The extensive contacts with thousands of UUs provided the information, the data, the Commission used to develop its Report and Recommendations.

At this GA, different opinions were expressed, respectfully, during three days of discussion on continuing the conversations about Article II of the UUA’s bylaws. Five amendments were approved and will be incorporated into the next iteration of the proposed Article II. It is important to note that the vote was to continue the conversation about reworking Article II and that is the charge given to every UU and UU congregation by the 2023 GA delegates. We must continue our examination of how we express our Core Values contained in Article II.

Watch for additional articles and gatherings where more information about GA will be provided and look for opportunities where YOU will be able to participate in this significant effort to mindfully express our core values for now and the future.
